iFridge: the next step

The iFridge: A Dock to Mount an iPad to a Fridge
What is the iFridge?

The iFridge is a dock we are designing that magnetically mounts an iPad to a fridge. We believe that the iPad would make the ideal kitchen computer. Mounted on the fridge, away from all the grime of the countertop, it would be an outstanding central hub for recipes, music, family photos, calendars, and weather/news alerts. For more details, please see this blog entry.

What is my donation being used for?

We want to bring this iFridge concept one step closer to reality. Since creating a polished design and manufacturing it is very difficult, we wanted to turn the project over to a collaborative design community called Quirky. Each week, Quirky reviews all the ideas they receive and they choose a product that they try to bring to market. The Quirky user community refines the design, creates the final prototypes, manufactures the product, and even handles all online sales. (Check out all the cool stuff they've made so far!) Submitting a product idea to Quirky costs $100. The money we raise here will go towards the Quirky submission costs.

What are the risks?

There are many! If we are lucky enough to raise $100, it may be that the Quirky community does not end up selecting our idea. And even if they do, there might be design or production issues that keep it from becoming a real product. And even if the product comes into physical being, it might be that nobody wants to buy it. The only promise we can make is that if we can raise the $100, we will submit the idea to Quirky. The rest is for destiny to handle!

What are the benefits?

You get the joy of knowing you tried to help make the iFridge a reality. One thing is for sure. Without you, it will never exist. Also, to be clear, your donation is just that-- a donation. It is not an investment. You won't be getting a share of the profits. We ourselves don't have that expectation. We are just volunteering our time towards this project because we want somebody out there to make an iFridge. It'll make the world a more nifty place. And the kitchen a more fun place!

What are the donation guidelines?

Because of the major risks involved, we ask that you donate no more than $10 per person. That way we also get many people to participate, which helps us validate our concept.

Thanks for your consideration!
